Concerns are mounting about the health of Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. After a similar event about a month ago, the 81-year-old went into a kind of rigidity after a journalist asked him a question on camera.
When asked on Wednesday if he plans to run again in 2026, McConnell apparently didn’t understand the question and asked for the question to be repeated. On the third attempt he seemed to have understood the question and responded with amusement; but then his face completely froze for about 20 seconds.
Hands clasped to the desk
When he became aware of this, an employee jumped up next to him: McConnell confirmed he understood the question, but was unable to comment further. “Excuse me, just give us a minute,” she said. He held the desk in both hands and looked down.
A second employee came by and asked the senator if he wanted to leave. McConnell said he was fine. He then cleared his throat, said “okay,” and answered two more questions before the press conference ended.
concussion after a fall
A later released statement stated that McConnell was ” momentarily dizzy”. As a “precautionary measure”, he will see a doctor before the next event. In March, McConnell fell during a private dinner at a Washington hotel. He suffered a concussion and was therefore treated in a hospital.
Still fit enough for work?
The current incident is reminiscent of a Republican press conference in the Senate in late July, when McConnell was even led away completely frozen, but reappeared a few minutes later and continued with the question-and-answer session. When asked if he is fit enough to continue doing his job, he replied yes.
The age of top American politicians is always a matter of debate – and it doesn’t stop with the president. At 80, Joe Biden is not only the oldest American head of state to date, he is also aiming for a second term.
Biden looks for dropouts in the conversation
In any case, Biden showed his sympathy: “Mitch is a friend. This, as you know, is not a joke,” the president said. “I know people don’t believe that – we have political differences – but he’s a good friend. I will try to contact him this afternoon,” Biden said on Wednesday.
