The German trade union Verdi wants to shut down the airports of Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Cologne / Bonn on Thursday and Friday with strikes by aviation security personnel. Verdi announced on Tuesday that longer waiting times and even cancellations or flight cancellations are to be expected. The union action applies to employees in the aviation security sector who work in passenger control, personnel and goods control and in service areas.
The strike usually starts in the night from Wednesday to Thursday and ends in the night from Friday to Saturday. Verdi has been negotiating for years with the German Federal Association of Aviation Security Companies (BDLS) to increase time premiums for night, Saturday, Sunday and public holiday work and to achieve better overtime compensation.
No breakthrough in the negotiations
Despite the recent strikes, there has been no breakthrough so far. A written offer from the BDLS is insufficient and cannot be agreed, as it does not improve work on Saturdays and Sundays, allowances for night work are too low and are only scheduled from 10 p.m. and not from 8 p.m. Employers of full-time and part-time employees did not want to pay overtime or overtime allowances.
“We call on the BDLS to finally present a negotiable offer during the negotiations on April 27 and 28 to prevent further strikes and end the conflict before Pentecost,” said Verdi specialist Wolfgang Pieper. Most recently, continuing talks on April 11 and 12 did not lead to a resolution and the employers did not submit an improved offer. “Working at airports must become more attractive to retain aviation security specialists and attract new ones to avoid longer waiting times for holidaymakers.”
