According to the French Minister of Transport, Clement Beaune, it is necessary to set a minimum price for airline tickets in the EU for reasons of climate protection.
“Air tickets for ten euros are no longer possible in the middle of the ecological transition,” says Beaune in the current issue of the magazine “L’Obs”. He will present a proposal to his EU colleagues in the coming days.
Austrian Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) is also in favor of minimum prices. “I advocate taxing greenhouse gas emissions and investing in greening,” said Beaune.
The French government is planning to increase taxes on flights departing from the country to fund investments in rail transport.
Opponents of floor prices – such as representatives of low-cost airlines – argue that they are not in the best interest of consumers. In addition, long-haul flights would not be registered, but they are responsible for half of the emissions.
