The low “Daniel” is causing new concerns in Greece. If the country had already been shaken by huge forest fires in recent weeks, now the other extreme is threatening. Huge amounts of rain will fall from the sky within 48 hours, according to forecasts. This increases the risk of landslides, floods and power outages.
Heavy rains on Monday reduced the risk of wildfires in Greece. For the first time in three months, Greek civil protection has given the green light to large parts of the country. The risk of forest fires is therefore very low.
Even the huge fires in the Dadia forest area in the northeast of the country near the Greek-Turkish border have largely been extinguished, Greek broadcaster ERT reports.
Such a storm is unusual
The Greek civil defense, on the other hand, warned of “heavy rain, storms, hail, high lightning frequencies and a noticeable drop in temperature” for the coming days. The region of Thessaly in central Greece and the Sporades archipelago, the north of the island of Euboea and the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece are particularly affected.
Such a low storm is unusual for the time of year in Greece, they usually don’t threaten until October.
Authorities on high alert
According to the newspaper To Proto Thema, the authorities are on high alert. Up to 500 millimeters of precipitation is expected in the heavily affected areas on Wednesday evening.
Other European forecasts even assume rainfall of well over 1000 millimeters. According to the Greek weather service Meteo, one millimeter of rain corresponds to one liter of water on a surface of one square meter.
