She’s clearly happy with the new enclosure, as her housemate brown bear “Losa” only had a few quick glances. The 21-year-old animal was allowed to explore its outdoor enclosure at Hellbrunn Zoo for the first time on Tuesday. “She inspected every corner and swam a lot,” says zookeeper and district manager Silke Hempelmann. Notable: “Losa” repeatedly rubbed her back against the logs in the enclosure, marking them with her scents.
The zoo’s second bear – the 30-year-old male “Aragon” – meanwhile spent the day indoors. “The two have to get to know each other slowly,” says Hempelmann. And: “Only when we have a good gut feeling can the two really meet. This can take days, weeks or even months. So far they have only seen each other briefly through the fences of the zoo.” Both animals still react rather hesitantly to each other. “Bears are usually loners,” says Hempelmann.
Why was “Losa” actually brought to Salzburg? The female bear last lived in a Swedish wildlife park. However, this was abandoned. Conspecific “Aragon” has lived in Hellbrunn since his birth in 1993 and spent a long time with his mother in the enclosure. Hempelmann: “He is used to company. We hope he gets along well with ‘Losa’.”
