In the past, miners in the Montafon dug up valuable raw materials such as copper, iron and silver with laborious and heavy manual work. Some old tunnels can still be visited today. It is also a journey through time, showing how mining has transformed the region.
Bartholomäberg in the Montafon is one of the oldest mining areas in the Alps. The ore deposits there were already used in early Celtic times, as archaeologists from the Goethe University in Frankfurt discovered during excavations. The area was inhabited even earlier, namely in the Bronze Age, ie about 4000 years ago. The exploitation of mineral resources could be one of the reasons for this. Investigations have also shown that raw materials obtained in this country were apparently traded across national borders. For example, the raw materials for a prehistoric ax discovered in Saxony-Anhalt come from the Montafon.
