Heavy storms raged in parts of Tyrol on Tuesday evening: A mudslide occurred in Seefeld (Innsbruck-Land district) – an ÖBB regional train was hit by the mass of rubble and literally trapped. The B177 Seefelder Straße also had to be closed. There was also damage and closures in Alpbach and Zillertal.
Around 7:30 PM a violent storm with heavy rain fell in the Seefeld region of Tyrol. A short time later a mudslide occurred between Seefeld and Scharnitz. The federal highway and the railroad that ran across it were completely buried.
Passengers and engineers evacuated
A regional train traveling towards Innsbruck was hit by the mass of rubble and literally trapped. The set also partially derailed. “The four train passengers and the driver were evacuated from the train carriage by the fire brigade and then taken to Seefeld train station. “They were all unharmed,” police said.
National highway and railway closed
According to the state of Tyrol, the mudflow was about 250 meters long and up to one and a half meters high. The B177 Seefelder Straße was closed overnight as a precaution. The situation on site will be assessed on Wednesday and a decision will be made on how to proceed. The railway line is also closed for the time being, ÖBB spokesperson Christoph Gasser-Mair explained to the “Krone” this morning. The train had not yet been recovered this morning.
Trees in Alpbachtal uprooted by storm
Heavy storms also hit the Tyrolean lowlands in the evening. In Reith im Alpbachtal (Kufstein district), strong gusts of wind uprooted several trees and fell on the municipal road and on the grounds of a residential building. A car parked near the house was damaged by a fallen tree. Fortunately, no one was injured here either.
