German climate activist Luisa Neubauer is concerned about the declining support for the climate movement. In an interview, she refers to a study by the organization More in Common, which shows that popular support for the climate movement in Germany has fallen from 68 to 34 percent since 2021.
It is clear that the climate movement not only makes friends, but must also be able to withstand headwinds, Neubauer told the weekly magazine Stern, according to the advance report. The 27-year-old geography student was also critical of the Last Generation demonstrations. Neubauer called the argument, widespread among members of the movement, that previous protests such as the Fridays For Future climate strikes had achieved nothing, “a calculated powerlessness of people willing to take action.”
Neubauer complains about ‘destructive rhetoric’
Neubauer emphasized, “This nothing-happens rhetoric is misleading and destructive because it assumes that the present is unchangeable.” The activist added: “We have demonstrably changed the situation.”
The ‘Last Generation’ is best known for its roadblocks. Neubauer responded to the climate group’s strategy: “It’s time to ask yourself whether it works that way.” Fridays For Future called for renewed global climate protests on Friday. Demonstrations are also planned across the country in Austria. In Germany, larger rallies will take place in Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne, among others.
