Closed for days – train stuck in Mure: clean-up work started

Date:

After the mudslide on Tuesday evening on the Tyrolean Karwendel railway between Scharnitz and Seefeld, in which a regional train was also hit by the mass of rubble, major cleaning work started on Wednesday. The connection will probably remain closed until Monday evening. A replacement rail service was set up.

The massive mudslide occurred shortly before 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening during a violent storm. Not only the B177 Seefelder Straße was under the rubble, but also the Karwendelbahn route. An ÖBB regional train was hit by the Mure. The train carriage also partially derailed.

Passengers and engineers evacuated
Four passengers and the driver were evacuated by the fire brigade from the train, which had recently started in Scharnitz and was heading towards Innsbruck, and then taken to Seefeld train station. They were all unharmed.

Heavy equipment used for cleaning work
According to the experts, two excavators have been in use since Wednesday morning to clear the route of rubble and mud. “Only then can the train carriage that was hit by the mudslide and partially derailed be recovered and any damage to the route assessed,” the ÖBB said afternoon.

From the current perspective, the railway line is not expected to open to train traffic until Monday evening. Trains will probably not run again on the Karwendelbahn route until next Tuesday.

Replacement rail service set up
During the interruption, the ÖBB set up a replacement rail service with buses between Seefeld and Mittenwald. Customers must inform themselves via the ÖBB channels before departure.

Cleaning work on the B177 Seefelder Straße is also in full swing. This was still blocked for the time being. The duration of the interruption was initially unknown.
