Two tornadoes left ten dead and dozens injured in China’s eastern Jiangsu province within a few hours. The first cyclone hit the city of Suqian, the second the city of Yancheng, about 200 kilometers away.
Five people were killed and four others seriously injured in a violent tornado that struck Suqian on Tuesday afternoon, according to state broadcaster CCTV. 137 buildings were destroyed by the hurricane and approximately 400 people had to leave their damaged homes.
Damage to buildings and companies
A few hours later, another cyclone hit the city of Yancheng in the same province in the evening. Here too, five people died and four others were seriously injured, according to CCTV. Numerous buildings, cars and businesses were damaged.
Higher temperatures cause extreme weather
Tornadoes are rare in China, but are becoming more common due to global warming. The reason for this is the increasingly higher temperatures, which according to meteorologists can lead to extreme weather. Last year, a tornado in Jiangsu province claimed one life; four people died in 2021.
It is the latest deadly extreme weather event to hit China, which has suffered severe flooding and extreme heat waves in recent months.
