Serious accusation – Armenia speaks of “ethnic cleansing”

Date:

Armenia has accused Azerbaijan of participating in “ethnic cleansing” against the Armenian population in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. “The intensity and ferocity of the offensive make it clear that the intention is to complete the ethnic cleansing of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh,” Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan accused the government on Thursday in Baku during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Service. Council.

According to Mirzoyan, more than 200 people have been killed and 400 injured so far, including civilians, women and children. More than 10,000 people have been forcibly displaced, including women, children and the elderly, forced to live outside without food or other means of livelihood. Thousands of families are separated.

The situation had been worrying for some time. But the international community refused to take the warning signs seriously enough.

UN Security Council “must finally act”
The Armenian minister complained that the UN Security Council had not responded adequately in the past – now he finally had to act. “The rights and security of the Armenian people of Nagorno-Karabakh must be given due attention and guaranteed internationally,” Mirzoyan demanded at the meeting in New York.

Authoritarian-led Azerbaijan launched a broad military operation to capture Nagorno-Karabakh on Tuesday morning. Although the region is within Azerbaijani territory, most of it is inhabited by Armenians. The two former Soviet countries have been fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh for decades.

The ceasefire following the last war in 2020, in which Azerbaijan, well-armed thanks to gas and oil revenues, had already conquered large parts of Karabakh, was repeatedly broken.
