China has warned the West of the consequences of strengthening its security alliances in the Asia-Pacific region. Beijing will oppose the “deliberate expansion of military alliances,” Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters in Beijing on Tuesday as he presented a comprehensive program on Beijing’s foreign policy goals.
Beijing will also strive to “resolve differences and disputes between countries through dialogue and consultation.” He did not say which countries he specifically meant.
Island conflict between China and the US
Against the backdrop of rising tensions with China, US President Joe Biden welcomed heads of state and government from the Pacific island states to a summit of the Pacific Islands Forum in Washington on Monday. The region has become a key location for competition between China and the US. Beijing’s leadership has significantly expanded its economic, political and military influence in the strategically important region in recent years.
Wang initially did not comment on a possible meeting between Biden and Chinese head of state Xi Jinping in the US. The two leaders are expected to meet at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco from November 14 to 16. As for preparations for participation there, China is in contact with all relevant parties and will “make an official announcement in due course,” Wang said.
The Chinese strategy document causes skepticism
The strategy document, published by China’s Xinhua news agency, said “building a global community with a shared future” is the “way forward for all the peoples of the world.” The document also discusses Russia’s war in Ukraine. She therefore reaffirmed China’s position for peace in Ukraine. This was met with skepticism in the West.
“Conflicts and wars do not produce winners,” says the new strategy document. There is “no simple solution to a complex problem,” it says.
