An interview that will spark discussion: Renowned behavioral researcher and author Kurt Kotrschal is against legislation following the Naarn bite tragedy in Upper Austria, in which an American Staffordshire Terrier killed a jogger. His opinion: Certain dog breeds are the problem.
“Kron”: Professor Kotrschal, you are a behavioral scientist and have written books such as “Dogs & People – The Secret of Our Soulmates”. What do you say about the current tragedy in Naarn?
Kurt Kotrschal: One thing in advance: there have never been as many dogs in Austria as there are now. Two million Austrians live with 750,000 dogs, and essentially it works brilliantly. The bite statistics also show that fewer and fewer incidents are taking place. That is why I am against actionist legislation, such as the legislation that our state policy currently envisions, which then affects all dog owners.
