After the alleged coma surrounding Putin’s bloodhound Ramzan Kadyrov, there is renewed excitement about a high-ranking figure in Russia’s ranks. After Ukraine allegedly killed the commander of the Black Sea Fleet, the Kremlin responded with a video.
Ukraine carried out a powerful military attack on Friday. In an attempt to drive the Russians out of the country, rockets hit the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Crimea.
The attack on the Fleet Headquarters headquarters was considered notable because it also involved senior military officers, including Viktor Sokolov and 34 officers. However, Ukraine could not officially confirm this. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was cautious in his initial response, declining to comment on reports of Sokolov’s death on Monday.
Video from the Department of Defense keeps people guessing
But on Tuesday there was a turnaround: the Russian Ministry of Defense published a video in which the supposedly killed admiral took part in a meeting of the ministry. The images were distributed via the Russian news agencies Tass and Ria. The recordings cannot be independently verified, but Russian military bloggers at least confirm that the meeting actually took place.
In addition to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, other high-ranking admirals and army leaders are also said to have participated. The camera turns quite often towards Sokolow, who – if the images are real – apparently was not particularly seriously injured in the attack.
Memories of Kadyrov confusion
It is currently completely unclear whether the admiral is actually still alive or whether the Kremlin is trying to use archive recordings to sweep the military setback under the rug. However, the approach brings back memories of Kadyrov. Only recently there were persistent rumors that the Chechen was seriously ill, in a coma or even dead.
However, only shortly afterwards did a video appear that was supposed to show the ruler alive – the authenticity of these recordings cannot yet be independently confirmed.
