An ointment developed from spider venom helps with erectile dysfunction.
Thirty years ago, Brazilian researchers began studying a strange side effect of banana spider bites: the animals’ venom, which can be up to 15 centimeters long, caused victims to suffer from priapism: a persistent and very painful erection. With this knowledge, the biotechnology company Biozeus developed the poison into an ointment with synthetic molecules that can treat erectile dysfunction. The gel is now undergoing clinical testing – ‘promising’, say researchers.
The research is also intended to help men with prostate cancer. They often refuse to have the prostate removed because it damages the nerves and can lead to erectile dysfunction. However, with the ointment this would no longer be a problem.
