Salmonella, listeria, campylobacter or norovirus: dangerous germs and viruses can lurk in many of our foods. A microbiologist reveals what eating habits to avoid, what foods to avoid altogether – or at least what to do if you can’t eat.
AGES, the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety, counted 28 foodborne diseases last year. A total of 128 people were affected, 57 of whom required hospitalization and four people died.
Salmonella was mainly responsible for this, followed by Campylobacter, Listeria and Norovirus, packaged in items such as bacon and chocolate. Dangerous viruses and germs lurk not only there, but also elsewhere, says Primrose Freestone, microbiologist at the British University of Leicester.
