Traveling with powders – Seychelles politicians accused of witchcraft

Prosecutors said the symbols on these documents were similar to those found elsewhere in the archipelago, particularly Catholic churches. The arrested man’s phone contained the name of Herminie, who was chairman of the National Assembly from 2007 to 2016.

Politically motivated?
He, the politician and six other Seychellois have now been accused of witchcraft and “unnatural and superstitious acts”. The investigation relates to the exhumed bodies of an elderly woman and a young man from a cemetery on the main island of Mahé in August. The leader of the United Seychelles Party was arrested at his party headquarters on Friday and his office was searched. He was released on bail on Monday.

After his arrest, Herminie said that for him it was “a decision that came directly from the presidency,” Head of State Wavel Ramkalawan. Herminie is a candidate for the 2025 presidential elections.
