Dramatic scenes in the early afternoon in Maria Luggau: After a 62-year-old started his car in the garage, it burst into flames within seconds with a loud bang. The injured motorist was just able to save himself.
Without suspecting anything bad, the 62-year-old started his car in the garage of the house around 2 p.m. Then an explosive bang and a sea of flames. Within seconds the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames. The driver was injured by the fire, but managed to free himself from the car and get to safety.
Two neighbors, retired firefighters, rushed to help. After pressing the siren alarm button mounted a few meters away and thus informing their former comrades, they provided first aid to the wounded – and then immediately laid a water pipe from a hydrate to the place of the fire and began to extinguishing the fire.
“A textbook example of helping neighbors”
A little later, the comrades from the Maria Luggau volunteer fire brigade arrived on the scene and did the rest. The Florianis pulled the vehicle out of the garage and prevented the flames from spreading to the farm building. “This was a good example of courageous help from the neighbors,” said operations manager Johannes Oberluggauer.
The car was a total loss in the fire and the garage was severely damaged. While the 62-year-old car owner had to be taken to hospital in Lienz, fire experts from the district and the state criminal investigation department began further investigations into the cause of the fire.
