16-year-old Kurdish woman Armita Garawand is said to have been seriously injured in a clash with female members of the vice squad in the Tehran metro. She is currently in hospital under stricter security conditions. Iranian authorities said Garawand fainted on the subway due to “low blood pressure” – there was no confrontation with security forces.
According to human rights organization Hengaw, 16-year-old Garawand, from the city of Kermanshah in the western Iranian Kurdish region, was taken into custody by moral police officers at Tehran’s Shohada metro station on Sunday and suffered serious injuries.
She is being treated at Fajr Hospital in Tehran under stricter security conditions and even family members are not allowed to visit her, Hengaw explained. A video purporting to show the incident was shared on online networks. It shows how a girl, who is apparently not wearing a head covering, is pushed into the subway by police officers.
The teenager reportedly suffered a head injury
According to banned news portal IranWire, Garawand suffered a head injury during the confrontation. According to state news agency IRNA, Masud Dorosti, director of Tehran’s metro, spoke of “rumors” and dismissed them as unfounded.
In recent weeks, authorities in Iran have increased pressure on women to follow strict dress codes, including the hijab, the Islamic headscarf that is mandatory in Iran.
Mahsa Amini’s death has never been forgotten
Since the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, authorities in the country are paying increasing attention to possible reasons for protests. Amini’s death after he was arrested by the moral police for not wearing a headscarf according to regulations led to weeks of protests against Tehran last fall.
