The bus of transport company La Linea had an accident near the railway line between Mestre and Marghera: 21 people were killed and at least twelve were injured.
A bus with several people on board veered off a causeway and fell about ten meters onto the track next to the road, Italian media report. It is still unclear whether it was a tourist bus or a public bus. Several ambulances have already arrived at the scene of the accident.
The railway line between Mestre and Venice was interrupted. The bus, which ran on natural gas, reportedly caught fire immediately after the collision. The fire brigade’s extinguishing work is still in full swing. The local health unit of Venice has activated the “serious emergency” protocol, which requires the availability of all hospital emergency departments.
A day of mourning was immediately declared
“A terrible tragedy has struck our community tonight. I immediately declared a day of mourning to commemorate the many victims who were in the crashed bus. We have witnessed an apocalyptic scene, there are no words,” Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said on Twitter (X).
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani expressed their condolences to the victims and their families. “I am close to the families of the victims of the accident in Mestre. I would like to thank the police, fire brigade and medical personnel for their immediate rescue efforts. “I express my solidarity with the city of Venice and the municipal council,” Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani tweeted.
