In Germany, the Left Party has sharply rejected Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s call to limit migration. Steinmeier addresses “the inhuman right-wing discourse of the AfD and the conservatives,” criticized party leader Martin Schirdewan. And added: “By doing this he is directly attacking democracy. This is unworthy of the office of Federal President.”
The number of asylum seekers in Germany has increased significantly this year: from January to August, more than 220,000 people submitted applications for the first time – 77 percent more than in the same period last year. In addition, there are now more than a million war refugees from Ukraine who do not have to apply for asylum.
Limit the number of asylum seekers: Steinmeier calls for impartial cooperation
On Monday evening, Steinmeier spoke out on behalf of the ARD in favor of limiting the number of refugees in Germany and called on all democratic parties to work together. Politics is currently still in election campaign mode due to the state elections in Hesse and Bavaria.
“I sincerely hope that when this is over, a climate will emerge again in which the democratic parties can reach an agreement with each other,” said the Federal President.
If refugee policy remains a perennially controversial issue, others would benefit, Steinmeier warned – without mentioning the AfD by name.
“Right-wing populist outbidding competition”
Schirdewan complained that the CDU/CSU and the government (SPD, Greens and FDP) had been engaged in “a right-wing populist outbidding contest” for months. “Human rights cannot be protected by abolishing them.”
