On Thursday evening, 200 people took part in a prayer vigil at a church in Mestre for the victims of Monday’s bus crash. The Patriarch of Venice, Bishop Francesco Moraglia, read a mourning message from Pope Francis.
“In loving solidarity with the families of those who lost their lives so tragically, I assure them of a special prayer of condolence,” Pope Francis’ message reads. In it, the Pope “asks the Lord for speedy healing of the wounded.”
On Tuesday evening, the bus fell from a bridge in a suburb of the Italian city of Venice. 21 passengers were killed and 18 were injured. The bus was on its way to a campsite.
Detectives have been working for days to determine the background to the accident. An autopsy was performed on the body of the 40-year-old bus driver on Thursday. This should determine whether the driver’s weakness could have been the cause of the accident.
The bus drifted and fell into the depths
Venice prosecutor Bruno Cherchi reported that the bus scraped the rusty guardrail for about 50 meters before falling. The bus is said to have drifted into an almost two-metre long gap between the guardrails, crashed into another guardrail and then fell into the depths.
child among the victims
All victims have now been identified. Nine Ukrainians, four Romanians and three Germans were killed, as well as the Italian bus driver. Other deaths came from Portugal, South Africa and Croatia. Among them was also a small child.
