Blood examined: no poison found in the AfD boss’s body

Date:

After AfD leader Tino Chrupalla was hospitalized following an incident at an election campaign event in Bavaria, forensic examination of his blood samples revealed no unusual findings. The German news agency learned from researchers on Friday that the researchers’ toxicological examination revealed nothing unusual.

The Public Prosecution Service also said on Friday that the examination of Chrupalla’s blood samples revealed nothing. Chrupalla’s office had previously made available for inspection a medical discharge letter from the Ingolstadt clinic, which showed that the toxicology screening at the hospital was also negative. The letter referred to both an “intramuscular injection” and elsewhere an “infection with an unclear substance”.

Mystery surrounding the alleged puncture site in Chrupalla’s arm
A “needle prick” in the right upper arm is also mentioned in the letter during the physical examination of the AfD leader. A spokeswoman for the Ingolstadt public prosecutor’s office was initially unable to confirm the information on Friday. The AfD’s federal office had previously spoken of an “attack incident”, a spokesman for Chrupalla’s office of a “leak spot”. However, police and prosecutors only said that “superficial redness or swelling” was found on Chrupalla’s upper arm.

The police and the Public Prosecution Service announced on Thursday that there is “no evidence that Mr Chrupalla was approached or assaulted”. According to initial findings, “several people took selfies with Mr. Chrupalla during the event, during which there was mild physical contact.” Nevertheless, the Ingolstadt Public Prosecutor’s Office started an investigation into a first suspicion of physical injuries – initially without concrete suspects. There are no witness statements indicating an attack.

Co-party leader of the AfD returns to election campaign events
According to the federal party, Chrupalla was released from hospital on Thursday. He will “seek further medical treatment.” All planned election campaign dates in Bavaria have been cancelled. Alice Weidel, co-party leader of the AfD, wants to return to the public stage after canceling an election campaign appearance on the Day of German Unity. Weidel had previously canceled a public election campaign rally in the Bavarian-Thuringian border town of Mödlareuth – for security reasons, according to his own statements.

Weidel fled to Mallorca after being threatened
As the party reported on Friday, Weidel had already been taken by police from her second home in the Einsiedeln district of Switzerland to a safe place on September 23 “following indications of a possible impending attack.” After a week in the Bundestag, she then flew to Mallorca with her family to get some distance from the events. “At the same time, she followed the advice to make herself scarce at home,” it continued.

A few days before the state elections in Bavaria and Hesse, the party can hope for higher numbers in the two states. In Bavaria, the AfD is at 14 percent according to the ZDF’s “Politbarometer” – almost four percentage points more than in the 2018 state elections. In Hesse, the party is at 16 percent according to the “Politbarometer” – in the elections five years ago, the AfD came in at about three percentage points less.
