Typhoon ‘Koinu’ caused extensive damage in the island state of Taiwan on Thursday. Nearly 400 people were injured and one woman died in a storm accident. Now the Chinese Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong has warned of strong winds and high waves. The population should stay away from the coast, it says.
“Koinu has become slightly stronger in recent hours,” the weather bureau said on Friday. Heavy rain is expected in the coming days. In the morning (local time), meteorologists found the typhoon about 350 kilometers east of Hong Kong. The population in the surrounding Guangdong province must also prepare for the consequences.
Train connections and ferries cancelled
Some long-distance train connections were canceled and no local ferries were running. “Koinu” is already the fourteenth typhoon of this year’s Pacific season and is expected to weaken further. The tropical cyclone moved westward from Taiwan during the night.
As reported, it caused serious damage in the island republic on Thursday. Nearly 400 people were injured and one woman was killed. Authorities reported a total of 3,800 accidents from different regions. About 390,000 households lost power.
Lan Yu Island in southeastern Taiwan, where record wind gusts of 342 km/h were recorded, suffered particularly severe consequences. The government sent ships there with relief supplies. On land, Taiwanese authorities have now withdrawn the typhoon warning. Koinu was the second typhoon to hit Taiwan this year, which is unusual for the country.
