Seven dead – Palermo disaster: captain denies escape

Date:

On August 19, the sailing yacht “Bayesian” sank off the coast of Palermo. Seven people were killed and others injured (see video above). The captain now denies the accusation that he abandoned the luxury liner while there were still passengers on board.

He did everything possible “to save the passengers and crew,” the New Zealander said. At one point, however, so much water entered the 56-meter yacht that it was impossible to search for passengers in the cabins. “I saved the ones I could,” the captain said.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Sicily has already opened an investigation into manslaughter. On Wednesday, an investigation was also launched against a 22-year-old crew member. The Englishman was on deck and should have reported the heavy windstorm that caused the ship to sink, it was said.

The guard didn’t notice Sturm
The captain ordered a watch, but they too did not report the approaching storm in the morning hours. “We could see that something was brewing,” witnesses in Palermo said. When the ship sank, the Canadian-Antiguan cook Thomas Recaldo was killed and the rest of the crew survived. Six of the twelve guests on board, however, died.

The Sicilian prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio is now investigating whether the captain and crew really tried to warn and save the passengers. The possible “crimes of negligent shipwreck and multiple murder by negligence” are being investigated.

15 people rescued
As reported, a waterspout was the cause of the sinking of the sailing yacht. This is a type of tornado. 15 passengers and crew were rescued. The fatalities are the chef on board, magnate Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, the high-ranking manager of the investment bank Morgan Stanley International, Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Anne Elizabeth, the lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Nada.
