The Russian parliament wants returnees from abroad to be monitored more closely for criticism of the war or other ‘unpatriotic actions’. This is currently also affecting Russians who have returned from Israel. A corresponding order was passed on to the Public Prosecution Service on Thursday.
Many returnees abroad “allowed themselves to make public statements to discredit Russia, the country’s leadership and the Russian armed forces in connection with the special military operation,” the letter said. In recent days, leading politicians in Moscow have repeatedly warned that war critics are not welcome.
For example, Duma head Vyacheslav Volodin said that everyone who supported victory in Ukraine “Magadan is guaranteed for them.” There were many prison camps in the area, especially during the time of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin. The letter from the Duma explicitly mentions artists, businessmen and also relatives of officials who may have been guilty of unpatriotic behavior. The Russian Parliament has now requested information from the Public Prosecution Service about fines and criminal proceedings initiated in this context.
The authorities must assist in the search
The authority should also look for other critics among the returnees. After the militant Hamas attack on Israel last week, many Russian citizens returned to their countries of origin. The most prominent among them is billionaire Mikhail Fridman. The war against Ukraine is officially called a special military operation in Russia.
After the outbreak of war, hundreds of thousands of Russians fled the country, partly for fear of being drafted into the army, but also because of increasing political repression of dissidents. The Russian government is internationally accused of using the fighting in Israel for anti-Western information campaigns.
