In Vienna’s 20th district, a majestic old tree will make way for parking spaces

Date:

The sight makes your heart bleed. A tree was probably allowed to grow on a plot in Vienna-Brigittenau for about 100 years. Removal took only a few hours “thanks to” chainsaws. It had to make way so that a handful of underground parking spaces could be built. According to residents, there may not even be a need for that.

There is nothing left of shadows, rustling leaves and the soothing sight of the majestic ‘neighbor’. The time had come on Friday and the tree pickers arrived with an aerial work platform. Neighbors made a last-minute effort to save the 37-meter-tall tree, which is on private property. Unfortunately without success. “Now garage spaces are being built here that no one needs,” says one of them. Public transport such as trams and metro are on your doorstep. There are also dozens of empty garage spaces in the area, another reported.

Neighbors can’t understand the distance
It is not clear why the poplar, which is important for the microclimate in the immediate area, had to be cut down. “You’re clearly exhausting everything you can earn,” said another resident angrily. “Where is reason, environmental considerations, intelligent urban development?” A good question given the rampant soil sealing. But the law is clear, the authority that approved the process argues against the ombudsman.

What the responsible authority says about the case
According to the subdistrict court judge, during the investigation it was of course determined whether there was a reason for the felling as provided for in the law. In the case of this tree, the construction authority determined that the tree removal was “related to an approved construction project for the construction of a new residential complex with underground parking” and that the realization of this project was not possible without felling. the tree.

The above-mentioned decision prescribed numerous replacement plantings. A total of 29 replacement trees need to be planted for this tree alone. A small consolation. Legally everything can be fine. But was it really absolutely necessary?
