Eleven journalists have been murdered within a week since the Hamas massacre

Date:

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), at least eleven journalists have already been killed in the war between Israel and the Islamist Hamas. The death of a cameraman from the Reuters news agency in particular caused a stir.

The journalists killed included nine Palestinians, an Israeli and Lebanon-based Reuters news agency cameraman Issam Abdallah, who was killed on Friday by shelling on the border with Israel.

There had previously been a firefight between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia in the area. The bullets came from the direction of Israel, said a Reuters colleague who was at the scene. Six other journalists, including two from Reuters, the French news agency AFP and the Arab broadcaster Al Jazeera, were injured in Friday’s incident.

Screams can be heard on recordings
“We are deeply saddened that our videographer Issam Abdallah was killed,” Reuters said. “We are urgently seeking more information, working with authorities in the area and supporting Issam’s family and colleagues.”

Reuters said Abdallah was setting up a live video link. The camera was pointed at a hill when there was a loud explosion. Smoke rose and screams could be heard.

Thousands of civilian casualties
“CPJ emphasizes that journalists are citizens doing important work in times of crisis and should not be targeted by warring parties,” said Sherif Mansur, Middle East program coordinator. All parties to the conflict must take measures to ensure the safety of journalists.

Last Saturday, hundreds of terrorists crossed the border into Israel in a surprise attack on behalf of Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip. More than 1,300 people died there. Since then, Israel has been attacking targets in the Gaza Strip. More than 2,200 Palestinians have already been killed in the Gaza Strip.
