The US has launched an evacuation operation for American citizens from Israel by ship. The cruise ship Rhapsody of the Seas left the northern Israeli port city of Haifa on Monday. According to the US embassy in Israel, the intention is to bring Americans and their relatives to Cyprus.
As the Cypriot Foreign Ministry reported, hundreds of American citizens aboard the ship are expected to arrive in the port city of Limassol on Tuesday morning. Charter flights from Cyprus are then organized for the onward journey. Scores of American citizens were among the victims of the Hamas attack in Israel.
“I have to take care of myself and my needs, but unfortunately I can’t continue living here,” said Alan Cohen, one of the American citizens traveling to Limassol aboard the Rhapsody of the Seas. At least 29 American citizens were killed in the Hamas attack and 15 others are missing. They were probably abducted to the Gaza Strip.
“No other way to get out”
“I was supposed to fly home on the 10th, but my flight with the Polish airline was cancelled. Then it was pushed back to the 15th, but I waited and that was canceled too. So I begged for money to get another flight and that was Air Royal Jordanian, which then got canceled too, so I have no other way to get out of here,” said David Gibson.
On Monday evening, the Israeli army reportedly carried out the worst attacks on Gaza since the start of the war. More than a million people have fled northern Gaza due to an expected Israeli ground offensive.
