This year, the most prestigious EU human rights prize goes to the Iranian women’s movement and the young Kurdish Mahsa Amini. More than a year after her death in Iran, she is honored posthumously.
The three largest groups in the European Parliament had nominated Amini for the Sakharov Prize, named after Russian dissident Andrei Sakharov.
“Women, life, freedom”
Iran’s women’s movement will be honored with Amini, EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola said on Thursday. “Women. Life. Freedom,” Metsola repeated on X, the slogan of the mass protests in Iran that broke out after Amini’s death.
22-year-old Amini died on September 16, 2022 after he was arrested by the Iranian moral police for wearing a headscarf that was too loose. Her death sparked an unprecedented protest movement.
