The British Ministry of Defense estimates that at least 150,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or permanently injured in the war of aggression against Ukraine. Ukraine even estimates Russian losses at more than 293,000.
Russia is likely to have suffered 150,000 to 190,000 casualties, including deaths and permanent injuries, since the start of the conflict, the ministry said in its daily update on Sunday.
Deaths from Wagner group not in statistics
If you also include the wounded who have recovered and have to return to the battlefield, the total number according to the British is around 240,000 to 290,000. The statistics do not include the dead and wounded of the Wagner mercenary group and its prisoner battalions, which were deployed in the hotly contested eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut.
The number of casualties roughly corresponds to the information from the Ukrainian side, bringing Russian losses to a total of more than 293,000. This cannot currently be independently proven. Russia itself – like Ukraine – generally does not provide any information about the dead or wounded in its own ranks.
The armed forces have expanded enormously since the start of the war
Since the start of the war, Russia has significantly increased the number of forces in Ukraine. “This increase in personnel is the main reason that Russia is able to both defend occupied territories and carry out costly attacks,” the ministry said in London on Sunday.
The British Ministry of Defense publishes daily information about the progress of the war since the start of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. Moscow accuses London of disinformation.
