A ferry with about seventy people on board ran aground off the Swedish coast. The ship was en route from south of Trelleborg to Karlshamn on Sunday morning, radio station SVT and news agency TT reported.
There were approximately 40 passengers and approximately 30 crew members on board the “Marco Polo”. According to initial information, no one was injured. Information about the possible cause was initially not provided.
Passengers were able to leave the ship safely
“Thanks to the cooperation with the Swedish rescue authorities, all passengers left the ship safely,” said the shipping company TT-Line from Lübeck-Travemünde. The passengers would now be cared for and offered accommodation in a hotel or other travel option. Some of the crew also left the ship.
Swedish authorities will now work with the remaining crew and insurance companies to assess the damage to the ship before taking further action, the ferry company said in a statement. According to the Swedish coast guard, the ship lost oil and fuel. Several of their ships are in use.
