In Austria, there are currently more and more sightings of the South Russian tarantula, which is completely harmless to humans. The largest spider species in Central Europe, which is threatened with extinction, is currently increasingly getting lost in gardens, garages and houses because of the mating season that has already started.
The males are currently looking for a mate and therefore wander around a lot and also enter buildings or gardens.
“The females are also on the move, but looking for winter homes. They build these as living tubes in sandy soil,” says the Nature Conservation Association.
In search of suitable places to stay, the animals then wandered into ‘human habitations’.
If the spider species is found in the house, the nature conservation association asks that you put the animals in a glass or something similar and take them outside again.
Observations can also be uploaded via the platform and app naturObservation.at to have them confirmed by experts.
