A medical emergency forced an Austrian Airlines plane bound for Vienna to return to Chicago Tuesday evening. To reduce landing weight, the pilots had to dump fuel. The plane then took off again with considerable delay.
As the Austrian aviation magazine “Austrian Wings” reports, a passenger on the Boeing 777-200-ER suddenly became very ill shortly after takeoff from Chicago O’Hare Airport. It soon became clear that the aircraft with flight number OS 066 had to return to provide the woman with urgent medical care.
However, because the aircraft had only traveled a short distance, the landing weight had to be reduced. According to the report, the pilots dumped fuel in an area specifically designated for this purpose by air traffic control. After a smooth landing, the woman was handed over to the emergency services.
The crew then decided to voluntarily take the flight to Vienna again despite overtime. The report states that the legally permitted service time will not be exceeded. The plane lands at Vienna airport during the morning.
