Central Europe’s largest spider, the South Russian tarantula, can be found in the industrial and wine districts. However, the tarantula species is harmless.
The mating season is currently driving the males of the South Russian tarantula on the move. And in search of mates, the crawling creatures, which can grow up to four centimeters in size, can also get lost in garages or homes.
The females of the largest spider species in Central Europe, which is widespread in Austria from Burgenland in southeastern Lower Austria to the Czech border in the Weinviertel, are looking for winter homes. Although they prefer sand tubes, they sometimes get lost in living areas as well.
Provide documentation
Experts from the Nature Conservation Association are calling on anyone who discovers a South Russian tarantula in their home to catch it in a glass and bring it outside. Data from observations should be uploaded to the Internet for documentation purposes.
