Destination Germany – Caravan full of AK-47s: arms smuggling stopped

Date:

The Carinthian police stopped an international arms smuggling operation on the Tauern Autobahn: as many as thirty Kalashnikov AK-47s and kilos of ammunition from the Balkans were seized during the routine check.

Major success in the Carinthian police’s search in the fight against international organized crime: As has only now become known, investigators attacked a German vehicle and caravan during a check on the Tauern Autobahn in Weißenstein at the beginning of October – and 30 Russian AK-47 machine guns were discovered inside, which are reproduced under license in Serbia.

International investigations
The associated magazines and no less than 30 kilograms of ammunition were also seized at the entrance. Because the weapons are war materials, the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Combating Terrorism has taken over the case. They declined to comment on the seizure of the weapons, citing ongoing international investigations.

The investigators also do not want to comment on the identity of the arms smuggler, who entered Austria via Slovenia and the Karawanken Tunnel and wanted to go to Germany, nor on possible buyers of the arms shipment from the Balkans. It cannot be ruled out that the machine guns were intended for violent anti-state groups.

“Scanmobil” arrived from Vienna
Or a drug gang wanted to increase its weapons arsenal. In any case, how seriously the police take the seizure is evident from the fact that specialists from the financial police from Vienna traveled to Villach with a mobile X-ray vehicle to search the seized vehicles for possible additional weapons.
