The personal assistant of Ukrainian commander-in-chief Valery Zalushny has been killed in an explosion. According to the government in Kiev, it was an accident while handling hand grenades.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said on Telegram on Monday that the aide had several grenades in his house, some of which were birthday presents. He showed it to his son. One of the explosives was accidentally activated. While the father was killed, the son suffered injuries of an unknown nature.
Six grenades and a bottle of whiskey
The man who gave the officer the fatal grenades has reportedly already been identified. He allegedly gave the adjutant a bottle of whiskey and six grenades. More hand grenades were found during a search of his study, Klymenko said. The investigation is ongoing. The recipient may have thought the grenades were dummies.
Kiev rules out an attack
Saluschnyj had earlier confirmed the death of his assistant. “Today my assistant and close friend died under tragic circumstances on his birthday, among his relatives,” Zalushnyj said on Telegram. An attack or trace from Moscow as part of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine was ruled out in Kiev.
