Loving memory – King Charles: Tribute to the Queen in “King’s Speech”

Date:

Charles made his first speech as king on Tuesday at the opening of the new session of the British Parliament in London. For the “King’s Speech,” the British monarch wore the Imperial State Crown and State Mantle, as he did at his coronation in May, and Queen Camilla sat next to him. It was the first speech by a British king in seventy years.

During the ceremony, King Charles read Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s program for government to the assembled members of the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

Charles paid tribute to the queen
In his speech, Charles lovingly paid tribute to his mother, who passed away last year. At the start of his speech from the throne, the monarch spoke of the “legacy of service and devotion” of his “beloved mother”.

In paying tribute to his mother, Charles followed in the footsteps of the Queen herself, who had also spoken warmly of her father, King George VI, during her first ‘Queen’s Speech’ in November 1952.

“King’s speech” as a symbolic act
The British royal family remains neutral on political issues. It is only a symbolic act that the government declaration is read out by the monarch as head of state. In this context, the government traditionally announces its most important plans for the coming year.

Even though it was Charles’ first King’s Speech, it was not his first speech to Parliament. In May 2022, the then heir apparent Charles had already given the traditional speech in Parliament on behalf of his mother due to Queen Elizabeth II’s health problems.

Camilla in her coronation dress and special tiara
Queen Camilla, who sat at the King’s side at this momentous moment, wore King George IV’s famous state tiara for the first time.

The monarch’s wife also chose to wear her coronation dress, designed by designer Bruce Oldfield, for her first state opening.

Great honor for Princess Anne
Charles’ royal debut was also recognized with a great honor by his sister, Princess Anne, British media reported on Tuesday. The 73-year-old has been given a key role in the King’s Speech in the House of Representatives.

In recognition of her years of unwavering loyalty, the Princess Royal appeared at the event as a ‘golden baton in waiting’. This prestigious position will be given to the person entrusted with the regent’s personal safety, it was said in advance. Anne had already played this role at Charles’s coronation.

By carriage to Parliament
Earlier, King Charles and Queen Camilla were taken from Buckingham Palace to Parliament in a carriage.
