What is Israel planning? – Advisor: Netanyahu did not talk about occupation

Date:

After Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he would take control of the Gaza Strip indefinitely after defeating the terrorist organization Hamas, an adviser to the prime minister sought to correct the statements on Wednesday. There was no question of a continuation of the occupation.

Netanyahu’s words in an interview with American broadcaster ABC raised questions about what exactly Israel was planning. “When this is over and we have defeated Hamas, it is critical that there is no resurgent terrorist element there, no resurgent Hamas,” senior government adviser Mark Regev told CNN on Tuesday. “There is no point in doing this (the military offensive against Hamas, mind you) and just starting over.”

“Security presence” is important
A “distinction must be made between security presence and political control,” Regev continued. The first would be important so that the army could conduct operations depending on the threat situation.

Since the terrorist attacks by Hamas and its allies on Israeli soil on October 7, which left more than 1,400 dead, the Israeli army has been taking action against terrorists in the Gaza Strip. At least 240 people are still under Hamas control there. Israel’s goal is to free the hostages and destroy Hamas and its military structures so that it can no longer attack Israel in the future.

US warns of ‘big mistake’
As a close ally of Israel, the US has been warning for some time against a reoccupation of the Gaza Strip after the end of the war. This would be a “big mistake”, US President Joe Biden said a month ago. Following Netanyahu’s comments on ABC, John Kirby, communications director of the US National Security Council, reiterated the US government’s position on Tuesday.
