Swedish EU official Johan Floderus has been charged by the Iranian judiciary. There are likely accusations of espionage – and Tehran could even impose the death penalty for this.
Justice spokesman Massoud Setajeschi reported on the case to journalists in Tehran on Wednesday, as the justice portal Misan wrote. There was initially no information about the details of the charges. Floderus has been held in Iran for over a year.
Iran’s secret service reported in the summer of 2022 that a Swede had been arrested on espionage charges after visiting the country several times as a tourist.
Relations between Iran and Sweden were tense
A possible background to the case is the tense relations between Sweden and Iran. Tehran is demanding that Sweden release Hamid N., a citizen who was sentenced to life in prison for participating in mass executions of political prisoners in Iran.
In May, the Iranian judiciary executed a Swedish-Iranian dissident accused of terrorist activities. Another dual national, doctor Ahmad Reza Jalali, was also sentenced to death in Iran on espionage charges.
