There is an unwritten law in Vorarlberg: if there is something supposedly important to report, the governor does it himself.
According to this criterion, the presentation of the “Vorarlberg Code” for asylum seekers last week was not a particularly important event: “only” ÖVP club president Roland Breakfast and State Councilor Christian Gantner, responsible for integration issues, were present at the PK in this regard, but none by Markus Wallner was present at Track. And not without reason: the PK was in fact a party event for the ÖVP, during which some headlines about the ‘code’ were hyped up. Does this code even exist in written form? No! Have the legal questions been clarified in advance, such as whether it is even permissible to require asylum seekers to do charity work? No! Do you agree with your green coalition partner? No!
What Breakfast and Gantner called a “code” is at best a statement of intent to hold asylum seekers more accountable in the future, if this is even legally possible.

Above all, the ÖVP from Vorarlberg wanted to send a clear signal towards the FPÖ a year before the state elections and therefore briefly activated the right turn signal. The message: if you want a tougher line against asylum seekers, you don’t have to vote for the Freedom Party.
However, the Ländle Blacks did not expect the issue to be immediately picked up by the national media. Even Wallner is surprised that the “Vorarlberg Code” is causing such a fuss. And he also seems a little embarrassed when he has to squeeze out sentences like this: “The details still need to be worked out – we will have a proposal in a few weeks,” “Whether asylum seekers could be required to do community service, that must be the case, the Ministry of the Interior must clarify this.”
And suddenly the ÖVP is in debt
The fact that the ‘Vorarlberg Code’ has taken on such a life of its own is not least a lesson in how politics works in Austria: a few headlines are often enough – and the army of ignorants begins to move come. The punch line: now the ÖVP must actually deliver something: an “Austrian Code”.
Otherwise the shot will backfire. And all this is just because a few ÖVP politicians in the West have convinced themselves that they now have to poach a little on FPÖ territory when it comes to asylum policy, and someone had the brainwave to create a loose construction of take pieces of thought to a higher level. to the status of a “code”. …
