Protest successful – Nobel Peace Prize winner breaks off hunger strike

Date:

Imprisoned Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi went on hunger strike for two days without being taken to a hospital without wearing the mandatory headscarf. “I will not continue to wear a headscarf until the headscarf requirement is abolished,” she said in a message sent by her family on Friday.

The 51-year-old went on a hunger strike on Monday after refusing to cover her head before being taken to hospital. Two days later, she said she was taken to hospital without a headscarf and called off her hunger strike. She needed urgent treatment for heart problems. Initially, she was forbidden to be transported from prison to hospital because she did not want to wear the headscarf.

Imprisoned and flogged for protesting
Mohammadi plays a central role in the fight for women’s rights and freedom of expression in her country. She has been campaigning against the mandatory headscarf and the death penalty in Iran for decades. For this reason, she has been repeatedly imprisoned and flogged since 1998. Since November 2021, she has been imprisoned in Tehran’s infamous Evin prison for “propaganda against the state”.

For her efforts, Mohammadi received the Nobel Peace Prize in early October. Her daughter Kiana, who fled to France with her family, and her twin brother Ali will receive the award on their behalf in Oslo on December 10.
