The London police are preparing for a large-scale pro-Palestinian demonstration with hundreds of thousands of participants. Organizers expect around 500,000 demonstrators to attend the demonstration in the British capital on Saturday. This would make it one of the largest political protest marches in British history.
The protesters planned to march from downtown Hyde Park to the U.S. Embassy around noon and demand an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. There are almost 2,000 police officers on duty.
Guards at the war memorial
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called on demonstrators to behave peacefully and respect the British commemoration of the Second World War on Armistice Day. On the anniversary of the armistice in the First World War in 1918, politicians and the royal family traditionally commemorate the war dead at the Cenotaph war memorial in the city center.
Demo ban requested
Several conservative politicians had called on London police to ban the pro-Palestinian rally so as not to overshadow the commemoration. But the authority rejected this, citing the law. A call to voluntarily abandon the demonstration died down.
Interior Minister Suella Braverman subsequently criticized the police for condoning crimes committed by left-wing and pro-Palestinian protesters. The comments also sparked sharp criticism within her Conservative Party and calls for Prime Minister Sunak to sack the minister.
Tens of thousands of people had already expressed their solidarity with Gaza during rallies in London last weekend. There were isolated cases of anti-Semitic and anti-Israel crimes.
