Without mandatory testing – Corona causes more than 2,000 absenteeism due to illness in Upper Austria

Date:

It feels like half of Upper Austria is sniffling and coughing. The symptoms last a long time. But this year it is the first “normal” autumn again, which we have to get used to again. Corona still plays a major role, but the fear has long been lost. But the ‘flu wave’ is only just starting to roll in.

There is a “nice” group: Adeno, rhino, RS, flu and not to mention coronaviruses make our lives difficult. It feels like half of Upper Austria is coughing and sniffling. “It was expected and it’s completely normal. The catch-up effect like last year no longer exists this year. But we just have to get used to the fact that many people catch a cold in the autumn,” says pulmonologist Bernd Lamprecht of the University Hospital Linz. The fact that complaints often last for weeks, sometimes up to two months, is no different than before. “The residual conditions are annoying. You cough, but you are no longer contagious. After overcoming an infection, the airways are hypersensitive, if you cough the effect is enhanced.”

Last year the number of coronas doubled
41,174 ÖGK insured people – employees and unemployed – are currently on sick leave in Upper Austria. Of these, 9,567 have flu-like infections, 47 flu and 2,185 corona. Last year, almost twice as many compatriots were on sick leave due to Covid – Corona has no longer been reported since July 1, 2023.

There are still tens of thousands of rapid Covid tests in households. “They are also suitable for the common variants. If you have complaints, it is also wise to get tested. But whatever virus is behind an infection, the following applies: if you feel sick, you should limit contact with other people, follow cough and cold etiquette and wash your hands a lot,” says Lamprecht, who knows that the “ flu wave” is still coming.
