“Recovered” money – 62 kg of two-euro coins in the car: man convicted

Date:

During a check at the border with Austria, Bavarian police officers found 62 kilos of two-euro coins in a car. The coins, which had apparently already been devalued, were stored in various places in the car coming from Austria.

The 33-year-old driver of the car said he found the containers containing the coins next to a rubbish bin in a car park near Verona in northern Italy. The value of the coin was estimated at around 15,000 euros. It was found in April when the man wanted to cross the border in Kiefersfelden.

Coins were ‘recovered’ illegally
During investigations by the Munich Customs Investigation Office, it was found that the coins had originally been devalued and sold for scrap. They were then again illegally used to feed vending machines, the Traunstein Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Munich Customs Investigation Office announced on Tuesday.

Two years in prison for counterfeit money
At the end of August, the driver of the car was sentenced by the Rosenheim court to two years in prison for counterfeit money, the execution of which was suspended. The verdict is now legally binding.

The seized “restored” coins were canceled at the Bundesbank in October. The remaining scrap was resold and the proceeds went to the German government treasury.
