A 43-year-old has been tracked down in Hungary for allegedly breaking into 24 churches in Burgenland and two in Styria. The man is said to have destroyed doors or windows of the churches and gained access to the sacristies to steal money.
In Burgenland, cash was stolen from 24 churches in the districts of Eisenstadt-Raum, Neusiedl, Oberpullendorf and Oberwart between late June and mid-September. In Styria, the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district was affected. The perpetrator is said to have destroyed doors or windows of the churches and gained access to the sacristies to steal money. He also broke open the sacrificial coffins, Burgenland state police reported on Wednesday.
A DNA hit, camera evaluations and witness interviews eventually led investigators to the 43-year-old Hungarian. According to police, the man was arrested in Hungary last September after leading police on a chase after breaking into a church there. This caused him to lose control of his vehicle and cause a traffic accident.
