Change of power recorded – New Prime Minister: Peace will soon reign in Luxembourg

Date:

More than five weeks after the elections in Luxembourg, the new government was installed under the leadership of future Prime Minister Luc Frieden. His Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) entered into a coalition agreement with the Democratic Party (DP). The new government will be sworn in on Friday.

The coalition agreement will strengthen Luxembourg for the future, Frieden said on Thursday after the signing in the EU’s second smallest country.

Replaces Jean Asselborn
The previous Prime Minister Xavier Bettel (DP) will become Deputy Prime Minister and will be part of the new government as Minister of Foreign Affairs. Bettel succeeds the Social Democrat Jean Asselborn, who was Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg for more than 19 years. The new government will have fifteen ministers instead of the previous seventeen. Of these, the CSV represents eight and the DP seven. The committees of both parties gave the green light to the new government alliance on Wednesday evening.

“Huge” expansion of renewable energy planned
Thanks to common goals, the two sides had agreed on a government program that would strengthen the economy, the climate and society as a whole, Frieden said. He cited tax relief for citizens and the creation of more affordable housing as key points of the agreement. Renewable energy must be expanded “massively” and bureaucracy must be reduced.

In the October 8 elections, the three-party coalition of Liberals, Greens and Social Democrats, which had been in power since late 2013 and led by liberal Bettel, was voted out due to the Greens’ bitter losses. The CSV emerged from the elections as the strongest party, followed by the DP. The alliance has a majority of 35 of the 60 seats in parliament.
