The waste of valuable food is fueling the climate crisis and species extinction. In an interview on krone.tv, Dominik Heizmann, program manager for sustainable food at WWF, says: “Animal foods are very resource-intensive. Depending on where you stand personally, you should replace animal products with plant-based alternatives.”
The figures are alarming: approximately 40 percent of the food produced worldwide is not consumed. In Austria alone, approximately one million tons of food ends up in the trash every year. This is calculated per capita, more than 100 kg per year. According to Heizmann, agriculture makes a significant contribution to food losses. “Especially due to the use of feed that has to be transported over long distances.” A look at the various sectors shows that more than half of food waste occurs in private households.
When it comes to sustainable food, Heizmann gives practical tips for private individuals. He emphasizes that reducing the consumption of animal products and increasing the use of plant-based alternatives can make an important contribution.
