The Bipa branch in the basement of Linz main station was flooded within a very short time and was immediately closed. Structural defects in the station building were, as some Kiebizers immediately suspected, not the cause. The drugstore will remain closed at least until the middle of next week.
Imagine: with the shower gel in your hand, you feel the first drops of water from the rain shower falling gently on your head. A nice thought when you’re in the bathroom, but not when you’re standing in front of the shower gel rack in your local drugstore. This happened on Wednesday in the Bipa branch in the basement of Linz main station.
It suddenly rained heavily from the ceiling and light shafts, according to videos from frightened customers. The company was immediately closed down.
“No structural defects attributable”
Because the ‘new building’ of Linz’s main station is almost twenty years old, there were calls on Thursday that the cause of water ingress could perhaps be explained by the structural condition of the station building. But ÖBB press spokesman Klaus Baumgartner quickly dismissed it: “The incident has absolutely nothing to do with structural defects and is the responsibility of the tenant.”
Branch closed at least until November 22
That seems obvious, because during the local inspection ‘Krone’ on Thursday morning it quickly became clear: not a single drop came from the ceiling of neither the neighboring AMS JobExpress nor the café across the street.
The branch of the drugstore chain is closed until further notice – as evidenced by a handwritten note on the glass facade. In the store itself, the clearing and drying work was and continues to be at full speed. Following a ‘Krone’ request, Bipa also provided information later in the afternoon that a burst water pipe was actually the reason for the current situation and that the branch would remain closed at least once until November 22.
