AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine has been approved in the European Union as the third booster dose for adults. The approval follows a recommendation from the responsible agency of the EU medicines agency EMA for use in adults who have also received AstraZeneca or one of the mRNA vaccines from Biontech and Moderna for their first two vaccinations, the group announced on Monday.
According to the Swedish-British pharmaceutical company, a booster vaccination with the vaccine from AstraZeneca works well against the omicron variant of the corona virus. Antibody counts increased “significantly” after a third dose, the company said in December, citing a study by the University of Oxford that helped develop the vaccine.
According to the current state of knowledge, three partial vaccinations are required for adequate protection against Covid-19. It doesn’t really matter what the third vaccination is, the effect is good, it was said at the time.
No recommendation for the 4th stitch
Nothing has changed so far, Ursula Wiedermann-Schmidt of the National Immunization Commission (NIG) confirmed only on Monday: According to her, there is currently no general advice for the fourth vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 for everyone aged twelve years and older in Austria – unless a new corona variant emerges that should make it necessary.
